Program Summary
CLS held its inaugural Multi-National Korean Language and Cultural
Program from July 12 - 24, 2004 on Korea's beautiful Jeju Island.
The purpose of the program was to bring students from all over the
world to learn the Korean language and culture in Korea. Practical
experience being the main philosophy of the program
Students sailed the overnight journey to Jeju on board a cruise
ship from the port of Incheon. That evening, dinner was followed
by a welcome party and orientation. Games and other fun activities
broke the ice and gave the students an opportunity to make friends.
The program itself was in the city of Pyo-Sun, located approximately
40 km from Jeju city. This region is known for its rocky beaches
and panoramic views of the South Sea (East China Sea).
Taking advantage of Pyo-son's natural setting and scenery, students
were taken outside of the classroom as much as possible. They went
on mini-hikes up the surrounding mountains and day trips to the
beach for some fun in the sun.
They explored an underground lava cave, visited mystical waterfalls,
an organic farm and the World Cup Stadium. During all these trips
our native Korean-speaking instructors encouraged the students to
use the Korean language in the variety of natural settings.
On the last day of the program, to congratulate everyone for their
hard work and dedication, the students and instructors were treated
to an afternoon of horseback rides, an evening of bowling and a
night of karaoke. They sang their hearts out until the wee hours
of the morning and memories were made that will not easily be forgotten.
Students enjoyed three organic meals a day in a modern air-conditioned
dining room that over looked the breathtaking views of the South
Sea.
Student comments
¡°I liked the program very much, mainly because of the good atmosphere,
the teachers being funny and nice and the other kids. By saying
the names of all the things at our meals, we learned vocabulary
easily, but we especially learned by holding conversations with
one another every day.¡±
