Program Introduction
In a city that is so much a part of the global subconscious, it's
pretty hard to pick a few highlights - wherever you go you'll feel
like you've been there before. For iconic value, you can't surpass
the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park and
Times Square.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art are
two of the world's top museums, and the Guggenheim Museum and American
Museum of Natural History aren't far behind. You can also visit
the campuses of Columbia University and New York University, which
are both located right in the city.
These are but a few of the attractions that draw people to New York
not only from all over the United States, but also from all over
the world. Bookshops, food, theatre, shopping, sports, people: it
doesn't really matter what you do or where you go in New York on
any particular day because the city itself is filled with excitement
and provides an exhilarating experience.
The Best of Both Worlds
Our New York program merges the exuberance of the city with the
serenity of suburban New Jersey. Students live in a modern condo-style
suite located in Edgewater, New Jersey, with sweeping views of the
Manhattan skyline.
The suites are fully furnished and equipped with high-speed Internet
and digital cable television. Located right next to the apartment
complex is a riverfront esplanade with restaurants, cafes, boutique
shops, and a movie theater.
The goal at CLS is to expose its participants to New York¡¯s global
arena and thereby open their minds to life¡¯s possibilities in a
global age. For men and women, both young and old, who are planning
to study, work or visit a Western society, our New York Program
will provide a foundation of cultural understanding that will enrich
their lives and contribute to future success.
Experiential Learning
Our programs are founded on the belief that language acquisition
requires practice in the real world. The limited classroom time
in our New York Student Programs is therefore focused on preparing
students to be able to deal with the cultural and language situations
they will encounter during their daily excursions.
CLS instructors present vocabulary, phrases, themes and ideas on
the day¡¯s topics, and provide opportunities for role-play and discussion.
Then it is time for the participants to put their newly acquired
skills to immediate practice.
Daily experiential learning activities outside of the classroom
have been carefully selected to expose the participants to a wide
variety of settings ranging from casual to luxurious and introducing
different aspects of life in New York, from social etiquette and
fashion to politics and sports. The aim is to give students the
confidence and know-how to deal with any situation that may arise
in the World¡¯s Greatest City.
